Legendary event that shuts down the highway and lifts speed limits for hypercars in Idaho is canceled due to insurance issues.
For over a decade, millions of dollars worth of supercars have descended upon the small town of Ketchum, Idaho, for a chance to drive on a public road with no speed limit. A charity event like no other, The Sun Valley Tour De Force brought the likes of Pagani, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Ferrari, and McLaren to a legendary ski town.
Unfortunately, the event organizers updated the event’s website on June 18th, 2025, to notify the world that the 2025 event has officially been canceled. According to the release, the event’s insurance company suddenly canceled its policy. This comes as devastating news to participants and spectators alike. However, it’s not entirely surprising.
A Near-Death Tragedy in 2024

At last year’s event, a black Porsche 911 Turbo cabriolet was making its high-speed run on the closed highway during the first heat of the day. Tragically, at the end of the closed course, the Porsche lost control and left the road at an estimated speed of north of 200 miles per hour. The cause is still not entirely known, as far as I am aware. However, frame-by-frame video of the crash can be found online. The footage suggests a rear tire blew after a dip in the road at a high rate of speed, causing the driver to lose control. Fortunately, both the driver and passenger survived, miraculously.
Ultimately, despite my love for this event, I have to make a confession. This type of accident truly felt like it was only a matter of time. The road is not a track; it is a public roadway that police close in intervals for the entrants to drive on. There are potholes, cracks, repairs, and even the occasional live animal on the course. The fact that it took this long for an incident to occur is somewhat surprising.
This isn’t a slight of the event or its organizers. I want to give a special shout-out to Whitney Slade, who formerly managed the event. She truly helped start my career in automotive journalism. Furthermore, I know that she and everyone else involved lifted every floorboard and found every needle in every haystack to keep this event as safe as it could possibly be.
Crossing Fingers for the Future

This was, without a doubt, the highlight of my year in the automotive world every year. The event organizers became friends, and the picturesque Idaho mountains provided a stunning backdrop for a gorgeous weekend getaway. The insane collection of hypercars and thousands being raised for charity really were the cherry on top. It was far more than just a car event.
It’s hard to imagine a world where the Sun Valley Tour De Force continues. However, I’ll definitely be keeping my fingers crossed. I can only imagine the difficulty of finding insurance for an event like this. So, adding the incident from 2024 must only make it all the more difficult. I want to clarify that I am not aware if the 2024 accident was a factor in the insurance company’s decision. It is, however, hard to think that it wouldn’t be.
